Introduce basic network


LAN
Lan is a local area network that is defined and covered by a network address and broadcast address is the same. You need to remember also that the router device will stop whatever it protocolnya broadcast traffic, but the switch will automatically be forwarded.


VLAN
VLAN is a Virtual LAN is a LAN network that virtually created on a switch. In standard switch usually forwards traffic from one port to all other ports when there is traffic with the same broadcast domain through the port. For the special switches, they are able to make several different LANs with different id in every port, and will only forward traffic to ports that have the same id. Special type switch is actually automatically install VLAN in it (vlan id = 1) which consists of all the existing ports.


Why VLANs are needed ? 

Become very important also VLAN is used, ie when your network becomes increasingly large scale and broadcast traffic to be a burden throughout your network. Burden caused by too much broadcast traffic may cause network you fall and not as responsive before.


Whenever VLANs need to be implemented ?
You need a VLAN when the condition of your network:

• Having more than 200 nodes within your network devices 
• Many occur broadcast traffic on your network 
• You want to share some of your users into a separate group-group to increase security 
• Reduce broadcast traffic is mostly caused by a virus attack and other nuisance programs will be brought disorder to your network. 
• Or you just want to create multiple virtual switches from an existing switch 

Why not just use the same subnet ?
In the development of your network, may require different treatment (VOIP network, network servers, local network, the Gateway is different) but still inside the infrastructure and the same location.
Or it could be otherwise, you have several devices of different infrastructure and location but still in one segment of the same network (infrastructure sharing).

How is that different devices can communicate VLAN?
Vlan on different devices will be able to communicate with each other through a router (routing protocols). Just as several different subnets to communicate with each other with the help of a router.
